El Pit
DETAILS
The Pit is a deep, rugged gash in the jungle floor just 2.8km past Dos Ojos. The entrance is steep and narrow so be careful and use the pulleys to lower heavy equipment as needed. Arrive early for a morning deep dive and the best light penetration. Once in the water, stop and appreciate the peaceful environment that surrounds the tower above. Descends in the center of the Cenote through the shallow halocline toward the hydrogen sulfide cloud at 30 meters.
As Angelita, tree branches eerily protrude from the cloud, what appears to be the cavern floor becomes visible, but don't stop there! The Pit continues well below cloud and narrows in the dark to 40 meters. Continue your above-cloud dive by exploring the cenote's cavernous cantilever before ascending to the 10-meter sloping roof. Here you will not only find stalactites of all shapes and sizes, but also remember to look up and watch the rays of sunlight penetrating the wound from below.
